- Project Purpose: The Cheshire Bridge Road Safe Street & Resurfacing project aims to analyze existing safety and traffic conditions and propose improvements for pedestrian safety along Cheshire Bridge Road NE in Atlanta.
- Project Goals: The project's goals are to analyze existing operational conditions, enhance safety features, and make Cheshire Bridge Road more pedestrian-friendly.
- Project Scope: The project covers approximately 1.5 miles of the 5-mile Cheshire Bridge Road Corridor, specifically from just east of Piedmont Avenue to Lenox Road, including nine intersections.
- Project Status: Notice to Proceed was issued in April 2025, site visits occurred in May and June 2025, and a Draft Traffic and Safety Study has been submitted. A Concept Report incorporating City and Stakeholder comments is due August 29, 2025.
- Existing Conditions Analysis: The project includes an overview of existing field conditions, operational analysis, and historical crash analysis. Crash data (2020-2024) indicates a high number of injuries, with the majority of crashes occurring in daylight and clear weather conditions.
- Community Feedback: Community members expressed strong concerns about safety and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, desiring improved bike lanes, sidewalk improvements, intersection safety measures, a road diet, and protected bike facilities.
-
Recommended Improvements: Suggested improvements include:
- Pedestrian & Bicyclist Improvements: Raised sidewalks, high-visibility crosswalks, colored pedestrian crossing markings, sidewalk buffers, road diet, Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHB), gateway treatments, raised crosswalks, and three mid-block pedestrian crossings (at Lenox Road, Manchester Road, and Woodland Avenue).
- Intersection Improvements: Corner/turn wedges and hardened centerlines, and Leading Pedestrian Intervals.
- Miscellaneous Improvements: Retroreflective pavement markings, pavement striping (including edge lines), improved signage, lighting improvements, and pruning and maintenance of vegetation.
- Project Schedule: Concept submittal is set for August 29, 2025, final plans submittal for Spring 2026, and construction is expected to begin in Fall 2026.
